On June 11, 2013, the landscape of northern El Paso County was significantly changed when the Black Forest Fire morphed into the most devastating fire in the history of Colorado. The evacuation area (which included the community of Meridian Ranch) covered 94,000 acres, 13,000 homes, and 38,000 people. Three shelters were established that included temporary housing for humans, pets, and large animals. The fire, which was fought by 457 fire fighters, burned for nearly two weeks and in the end consumed nearly 15,000 acres including 509 homes and 2 lives.
In an effort to assist in the rebuilding process, locally owned Masterbilt Homes has opened a resource center conveniently located next to the Black Forest Subway (Black Forest Shopping Center) at 11590 Black Forest Rd. just north of Burgess Rd.
